Are skinny jeans dead? Fellow millennials, cover your ears.

There are mixed opinions about the tried-and-true millennial fashion piece, the skinny jean. If you were in on the fashion trends of the time, you definitely owned one too many pairs during the twenty-tens. Today, the it-girls of the decade have declared skinny jeans a major no-no, along with the side part, knee-high boots, and a long list of emojis, including my fave, the 😂 (I’m still getting over that one.)
If skinny jeans are your thing and you can't seem to let them go, first of all, hello, fellow millennial. And secondly, sigh. I get it — they are comfy, easy to style, and look good. However, the answer remains the same. The skinny jean seems to be dead (or at least in a very deep sleep). My condolences.
In 2021, "Are skinny jeans in style?" made the top 10 trending Google searches, placing in at no. 2, according to Fashionista. That question has since been on the forefront of many minds as we began to see a shift toward straight-leg, bootcut, flare, wide-leg, and oversized jeans and trousers.
In fact, straight-leg jeans took the crown for the "best-selling fit" in 2021 and continued in 2022, with the skinny jean actually seeing a decline in revenue, per global market information company NPD. Oversized jeans are so in style that makeup mogul Kylie Jenner was seen sporting what they call "puddle pants" in November, which are pants that are so long they literally drag on the floor.
However, if you can't bid farewell to your precious skinny jeans, don't panic. Even though many fashionistas today would tell you to ditch the skin-tight fit, skinny-style pants have been resurrected on the runways by Tom Ford, Raf Simons, Salvatore Ferragamo, and more while showcasing their S/S 23 collections. And although not made of denim, the fit is still tight-fitting and reminiscent of the skinny jean we know and love.
As always, trends come and go and often seem to be recycled every few decades. Seriously, many fashion-forward girlies today are walking around looking like '90s babies, complete with spiky buns and butterfly clips. And yes — the dreaded super low-rise jeans. Nevertheless, you may want to resist the urge to toss your skinny jeans because you never know when they'll be back.
Like a toxic ex, they always come back. Remember that.
